Everyone else can go on about “Joan Watson” and Lucy Liu and how much the romance is going to SUCK, but I’d rather talk about the Sherlock Holmes here.

Just look at him. Jonny Lee Miller. He may be English, but he looks like every other guy American teenage girl thinks is attractive. He is attractive, don’t get me wrong, but every show seems to get off on having good-looking members. The mark of a show is how well is can do even when the cast members are… not so good-looking. (e.g. Doctor Who and Sherlock. Argue all you want, their brand of attractive is one not many people hang on to.)

Sherlock Holmes is not meant to be a good-looking guy. He’s (originally) very tall, very thin, dark-haired and grey-eyed with a sharp, beaky profile. He’s not Robert Downey Jr. Benedict Cumberbatch is weird looking. Yes, I think he’s beautiful, but he looks like an alien. That happens to work for me, of course, but all in all…

I’m sure he’s a fine actor, but frankly, this is going to be another crappy romance because you don’t have a guy/girl team without romance on American TV. (e.g. House and Cuddy, Booth and Brennan, the people on Castle…)
